Many procedures that previously required a laparotomy are now performed using laparoscopy or hysteroscopy. Besides the clinical advantages of these procedures, the demand is also being spurred by the social and professional pressures placed on many women, causing them to request minimally invasive surgery so they can return to their normal activities in a short time. The contributors to this issue of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America are clinicians who are acknowledged leaders in this field with many years of experience. In this issue, the authors discuss new concepts, progress in advanced gynecologic endoscopic procedures, and new techniques—in short, it reflects the latest advances in the field.

Among the avant-garde procedures reviewed are laparoscopic abdominal cerclage, laparoscopic radical trachelectomy, and robotic surgery. Various advanced laparoscopic procedures are also discussed. The last five articles are dedicated to hysteroscopy, including the use of flexible scope and hysteroscopic tubal sterilization.

The contributions in this issue no doubt will be valuable for practicing gynecologists, residents, and fellows. Readers will gain an understanding of advanced minimally invasive techniques and learn about the development and delivery of relevant technologies. I hope that the materials in this issue will be helpful in directing new investigations and the clinical management of patients.
